Defiance Weapon Modding and Nano Effects Guide

In Defiance, having a set of powerful weapons is one of the key components to being successful in both PvE and PvP gameplay. It is, however, a bit difficult to find orange or purple gear (the rare ones). But, even if you don’t get a rare weapon for a while you can still have a strong setup. This is accomplished through weapon modding.

Defiance Weapon Modding Guide

How to Mod Weapons

If you haven’t figured out how to add mods to a weapon yet, it’s pretty simple. First, though, you need to make sure you have the gear you need. First make sure the weapon you want to modify has open mod slots. To do this go into your inventory menu and hover on the gun you want to mod. Under the image of the gun you will see 4 different boxes. If they all have a dash in them ( – ) the weapon doesn’t have an open mod slot. If, however, one or more of the boxes is filled with an image, there is an open slot.

You need to figure out what mods the weapon can use, too. Those images in the boxes indicate this. There are 4 that can be used. One will be for a mag, one is for a scope, another is for a barrel, and the other is for a stock. If you see the image for it, you can equip that type of mod to the weapon.

Defiance Weapon Modding

Once you’ve purchased of acquired a modification and want to equip it to a weapon just head into the menu and go into the 2nd tab on the right (the Salvage Matrix, pictured above). Click on ‘Select an Item to Modify’, click on the weapon you want to mod, then click ‘Attach Mods’ to equip the mod to it. You can also use this menu to put mod slots on weapons that don’t have any.

Mod Types

Defiance Weapon Mod Example

Modding a weapon is fairly cheap and has the ability to greatly improve the stats of the weapon. Overall, there are 4 core mod types you can obtain: Magazine, Sight, Barrel, or Stock. Each of these applies different stat boosts to the weapon you are modifying in the following ways:

Magazine – Provides a boost to how much ammunition the weapon carries.

Sight – Improves the accuracy of the weapon and gives the player a few choices of scopes. You’ll want to try out pretty much all of the sight mods just to find a scope that works best for you.

Barrel – Barrel mods are used to increase the total damage output a weapon has or give a bit of a boost to the crit hit damage it deals.

Stock – Different stocks apply different bonuses but they generally reduce the amount of kick a gun has (recoil) or provide a boost to the amount of damage your melee attack does when wielding the weapon with the stock mod on it.

You can purchase a modification at any of the mod vendors across the Bay Area. You can also earn them by completing side missions. They are pretty inexpensive. Some people say that modding a low-level or non-rare weapon is pointless but if those are the only weapons you have, you’d be wise to throw mods on them. They can greatly improve your chances in PvP and help you progress through PvE missions faster, too.

Nano Effects

Nano effects are environmental-type boosts that are found on some guns. There are 6 different effects. Each one has a unique ability which can help you deal extra damage, bind an enemy, or something along those lines. Here are the different ones you can find:

Defiance Weapon Nano Effects

Electrical – This effect will temporarily stun an enemy, leaving them vulnerable to weapon fire. It also makes player HUDs go out when they’re hit with it.

Incendiary – Causes the target to catch on fire, dealing a bit of damage for a few seconds on top of being shot.

Biological – This effect will temporarily slow an enemy down and also decrease their damage output for a few seconds.

Toxic (corrosion) – Inflicts vulnerability on the enemy. For a few seconds you will deal more damage to the enemy than normal.

Radiation – Seems to produce exactly the same effect as the Toxic nano effect.

Syphon – When hitting an enemy this will steal health points from the enemy and give it to your player. So it works as a slow regeneration effect.

Weapons with nano effects attached to them are typically purchased from vendors or acquired by looting either enemies or lock boxes. They seem to be especially rare to find.
