Black Ops 2 In-Depth: Overview of Launchers

Launchers in Black Ops 2 have a couple of uses. The first, and probably most important, is their ability to take out enemy scorestreaks in a snap. There’s nothing more annoying than continuously being killed over and over again on spawn by something like a Stealth Chopper, Lodestar, or Warthog. Luckily, with a couple of well-aimed shots, they can be taken out quickly with a lock-on launcher. But a couple of the launchers are also great for taking out a group of enemies with a fast blast.

So with that being said lets have a little look at the launchers available in BO2.

SMAW

Black Ops 2 SMAW

The SMAW is by far the worst launcher in this game. It has low range, deals little damage compared to the rest of them, and is generally ineffective. About the only time its useful is for getting a quick kill on a nearby enemy with a blast at the ground. And if that player happens to be wearing Flak Jacket, it won’t kill them. Overall, we don’t recommend strapping this bad boy on as your secondary unless you’re going after the Diamond Camo for your launchers.

Distance – Low (lowest range among launchers)

Damage – Low (lowest among launchers)

Enemy Type – Scorestreaks & Players

Mag Size – 1 rocket

FHJ 18 AA

Black Ops 2 FHJ-18 AA

The FHJ is probably the most high-tech, cool-looking launcher in the game. It has the longest range and deals the most damage out of them, too. Unfortunately, it’s made ONLY for taking out enemy aircraft, though. But, hey, it’s perfect for taking out annoying counter-UAVs and helicopters. It targets them fairly quickly and is capable of taking them out from great distances. It’s also able to take out enemy ground vehicles (like the A.G.R.) and turrets.

Distance – High

Damage – High

Enemy Type – Scorestreaks Only

Mag Size – 1 rocket (plus additional rocket for 1 reload)

RPG

Black Ops 2 RPG

The last launcher you unlock in BO2 is the good ol’ RPG. This can be used in many places in the campaign and it does have a fairly short range when compared to the other two guns, but this means you can get into the action with a weapon that causes some real serious damage. In multiplayer it mainly works for getting a quick kill on an enemy player or helping take out a ground-based scorestreak such as the A.G.R. It isn’t effective against aircraft because the rockets tend to not go straight when fired at distant objects.

Distance – Low (mainly effective at close range)

Damage – Low to Medium (low at distance, medium in close proximity)

Enemy Type – Scorestreaks and Enemy Players

Mag Size – 1 rocket plus 1 reload rocket
