Lock boxes are an essential part of the Defiance game. They are by far one of the best ways to get rare, epic, or legendary gear. You can purchase lock boxes by using a combination of Key codes and Scrip or by using Bits. There are 3 different tiers of boxes, each one costs a different amount and gives slightly different rewards. Below you’ll see what DefianceMasters.com has discovered about these in-game loot chests.
Right now, these are the ones that are available:
These can be purchased at nearly any vendor location.
Tier 2 boxes cost 8 key codes and 1000 Scrip OR can be purchased for 120 Bits. They contain 2 random items of at least uncommon rarity. Uncommon gear is marked by the color green, by the way. Green gear is pretty junk being only 1 level above white (common) items.

Based on our own experience as well as statements by other players on the Defiance forums and other gaming related websites, Tier 2 lock boxes are pretty much useless. They almost NEVER give out gear above blues (rare). So if you’re looking to score a high rarity weapon or anything else, forget about wasting your currency on tier 2s.
Right now Tier 3 lock boxes are the absolute best deal for players. They are reasonably priced for 24 key codes and 2000 Scrip or can be bought using 240 Bits each. These contain 3 random items and, based on our experiences, give players a much higher chance of looting Epic (purple) or Legendary (orange) grade gear. We’ve had great luck with these and so have tons of other players.
If you want better items, rack up a ton of Ark Salvage by breaking down lower grade gear into resources via the Salvage Matrix or by completing challenges, Arkfalls, etc, to gain salvage loot from enemies and completions. Use the Ark Salvage to purchase key codes (cost 1000 AS each). Remember to spend your key codes once you reach 75 in your inventory or you won’t get anymore even if you complete a mission or objective that rewards you with more codes.
Tier 4 lock boxes are the worst deal in the game. They cost a whopping 64 key codes plus 3000 Scrip or can be purchased using 400 bits. They are supposed to have at least 4 items of uncommon or greater rarity but usually only give out greens or blues. It’s very, very rare to see a purple or orange piece of gear come from these. Overall, the Tier 3 boxes are a much better investment right now.
